Almost everything I paint is within five miles of my home. The exceptions being pictures taken during holidays of our travels throughout B.C., and later painted with a healthy dose of imagination. Although based upon reality, my paintings quickly transform to a world where design and colour overrule what was actually there. The painting is much more important than the original image. I usually throw my original photo out after the first five minutes of painting. Within an hour, there is very little similarity between photo and painting. The beauty of painting is how we can let our imagination takeover and lead us to new places.

Enjoy the very best art and craft created by artists and artisans of the Southern Gulf Islands in this Arts Council-run gallery and gift shop. Open from 10am to 5pm daily from June through September, ArtCraft offers a wide selection of exquisite works ranging from paintings, wood-turned bowls, felted wool and silk scarves, ceramics, baskets, jewellery, soaps and greeting cards–all under the roof of historic Mahon Hall.

With more than 100 exceptional local artists featured in this annual, juried display of contemporary art and crafts, ArtCraft is British Columbia’s largest and longest running exhibit of its kind. Open from June through September, ArtCraft is celebrating 50 years of operation this year.

Also this year, ArtCraft proudly launches Art on the Hall, a project that brings together the community and local artists to create murals and hanging art on the facade of Mahon Hall. Enjoy work from established artists and newcomers to the field.

Proceeds from ArtCraft are used by the Arts Council to support and foster the arts on Salt Spring Island. Whether you’re a visitor or resident, be sure to visit ArtCraft and take home a unique island treasure.
